Hypermobility – Joint Laxity
Hypermobility, also referred to as ligamentous laxity, is a clinical observation where joints have a range of movement beyond typical expected limits. This is often associated with flexible ligaments that provide less structural support for the joints, which may contribute to discomfort in some individuals.
While colloquially known as being “double-jointed,” hypermobility can be associated with joint instability and may influence walking patterns or lower limb comfort. At Sydney Sports Podiatry, we provide comprehensive consultations and management plans for individuals with hypermobility. Our experienced team focuses on strategies to support joint stability and manage associated symptoms.

Hypermobility and Foot Function
Hypermobility is a common factor observed in patients presenting with foot, shin, leg, or knee discomfort, and it is frequently associated with “flat feet” (pes planus). Our principal podiatrist, Andrew Bull, has a clinical interest in this area and has provided clinical education to post-graduate podiatrists on this topic for many years.
Our management plan is multi-faceted. While orthotics may be a component of care for some patients, a comprehensive plan often includes specific strengthening exercises and footwear guidance tailored to the individual’s needs.
Long-term Management
Over time, significant ligamentous laxity may influence the development of various postural and foot-related conditions. We believe that professional assessment and proactive management are important steps in supporting lower limb health and supporting your ability to remain physically active.
